Bonteheuwel Learners Inspired by Art During Visit to Norval Foundation

In July and August, learners from the Amy Foundation’s Bonteheuwel High After School Centre were given the unique opportunity to visit the Norval Foundation in Tokai, Cape Town. This enriching educational outing introduced Grade 8 learners (ages 13–15) to world-class art exhibitions, striking sculpture gardens, and inspiring cultural experiences far beyond their everyday environment.

The initiative was led by Nabeala Clarke, the Amy Foundation’s Academics Coordinator and Centre Coordinator for three Bonteheuwel After School Centres. Recognising the impact of the visit, Clarke secured additional spaces and extended the opportunity to learners from Cedar Primary and Mimosa Primary, bringing younger children aged 11–13 (Grades 6-7) into the experience. In total, more than eight hundred learners benefited from the outings.

“As someone who works closely with our Bonteheuwel centres, I see every day how important it is to give our learners opportunities that spark creativity and self-belief,” said Clarke. “For many, this was their first time in an art museum. Exposing children and young people to these spaces helps them imagine a future beyond the challenges they face daily.”

By also inviting schools within the wider Bonteheuwel community, Clarke ensured that the outing was not only about Amy Foundation learners but also about uplifting the broader community.

The visit forms part of the Amy Foundation’s commitment to holistic youth development. While the organisation provides vital academic support and life skills, opportunities like this encourage children and youth to think critically, explore their creativity, and gain exposure to possibilities outside their communities.

“The Amy Foundation believes in nurturing well-rounded individuals,” said Moegamat Ali, Public Relations and Marketing Intern. “Partnerships with cultural institutions like the Norval Foundation allow us to open doors of imagination and growth for young people who might otherwise never experience such spaces.”

The Amy Foundation is a non-profit organisation based in Cape Town that provides children and youth from vulnerable communities with a safe environment to develop into well-rounded individuals. Through after-school programmes focusing on academics, arts, sports, and life skills, as well as youth skills development programmes, the Foundation empowers young people to reach their full potential and contribute positively to society.
