“I joined the Amy Foundation in April of 2021. I had an interest in fashion and dreams of becoming a designer, but I lacked experience. When I heard about the available sewing program, I signed up, thinking it would be a perfect way to start my journey.
During the course, I learned all about sewing, starting with the basics such as lines, different parts of the sewing machine, and working with various types of fabrics. We progressed to manufacturing different products like accessories and clothing items.
Fortunately, I managed to buy my sewing machine during the program, which greatly improved my sewing skills. Additionally, I also learned how to start and manage a business and how to communicate effectively in the workplace, which helped me improve my English.
I completed the sewing program in July of 2021 and obtained a learnership in garment repair. After finishing my learnership, I felt confident enough to start my own business, specializing in traditional attire like Shwe Shwe, mbanco, and beading.
In 2023, I returned to the Amy Foundation after a member of the YSD team contacted me. They needed a volunteer to help with the sewing class. Initially, I volunteered one day a week, assisting in the production of products for the Amy Foundation’s online shop. However, several months later, I am still here, now in the role of an assistant facilitator.
I thoroughly enjoy my current role, and I hope to continue helping learners develop their skills. However, my dream for the future is to have my shop for my business. I want to expand my business to cater to younger people by making clothing for children.
My words of wisdom for anyone reading this would be to confront your fears rather than avoid them. Dealing with fear is much easier in the long run while avoiding it will only lead you to structure your life around it.”
