Golf For Amy

Golf for Amy

Every year a group of Dutch volunteers organize a Golf Tournament in support of the Amy Foundation. This event takes place at the very challenging and well maintained golf course in Strand(Western Cape).

For 2019 , this valuable initiative was threatened to close down. However fresh volunteers have taken up the organization and the tournament will now  be held on THURSDAY 14TH FEBRUARY 2019 at Strand.

The non-golfing partners are most welcome after play,  for a drink and the inevitable   “BRAAI”.

The sponsorship benefits the AMY FOUNDATION for 100%. Please see the story of AMY Biehl below.

In this way , we contribute one day of our stay in South Africa , to the children of the AMY FOUNDATION.

Besides there are 2 days reserved for a (limited) group to visit the Education Center of the AMY FOUNDATION

and the adjacent township Guguletu, where you will see their good work in practice.

These TOURS take place on Tuesday 19th February and Thursday 21st February 2019.

The story of Amy Biehl

Amy Biehl was a gifted young woman committed to making the difference in South Africa.

A 1989 graduate of Stanford University. Amy received the Fulbright Scholarship in 1992 and traveled to South Africa to work for the future of a multiracial democracy.

While in South Africa, Amy assisted in registering voters for the country’s first free elections. Amy also worked diligently for the inclusion of women’s and children’s rights in the constitution of the new  South Africa.

On 25 August 1993, Amy Biehl’s life was tragically cut short in an act of political mob violence in the Township of Guguletu outside of Cape Town.

Four young men were convicted and sentenced to 18 years of imprisonment for her murder.

Through the process of The Truth and Reconciliation Commission the young men applied for amnesty.

Determined to honor Amy’s love of South Africa and belief in the process of The Truth and Reconciliation Commission and it’s outcome, Amy’s parents, Peter and Linda, went to South Africa to participate in the Commission’s hearings, where they chose to support amnesty for the youths. The men were granted amnesty and released from prison.

In 1997, Amy’s parents launched the Amy Foundation in Cape Town.

It is an non-profit organization whose programmes are focused on developing and empowering young people in the townships. The AMY program contributes to “community building efforts” such as a reduction  of crime and violence levels, HIV/AIDS education, sexual abuse prevention, gangsterism and idleness.

This is achieved by providing educational and cultural activities that offer students healthy alternatives to the negative influences with the aim of producing well –rounded future leaders and entrepreneurs.

In the last three years there have been a lot of investments in the upgrade of this golf-course. The result is a better lay-out, magnificent fairways and greens. It’s a great pleasure to play a round on this Course.

We are proud and thankful that we can organize our event on this course!
