Hello everyone! I’m Amahle and I’m 11 years old from Philippi. I joined the Amy Foundation last year June after hearing about it from my friends. I enrolled in the traditional dance programme and it’s been a wonderful experience because I get to learn new dance moves, how to communicate with other people and to respect adults.

Today was truly wonderful day as we gathered with

Today was truly wonderful day as we gathered with After School Alumni.It was a reunion full of excitement and memories. It was heartwarming to reconnect with fellow learners, sharing their journeys since leaving the foundation. Each conversation was an opportunity to reminisce about the shared experiences that shaped us during their time together.🤍💚

They had the opportunity to reflect on what the Amy Foundation can do to improve the experience for current and future learners. Ideas flowed freely as we brainstormed potential programmes mentorship opportunities and resources that could enhance the educational experience and help bridge the gap between past and present, ensuring that each new learner has the support and inspiration they need to flourish.🤍💚

A highlight of the day was Mr. Chaplin’s motivating pitch. His words resonated deeply with everyone in the room. He shared insights on resilience, the importance of ubuntu and the power of community in empowering individuals to achieve their goals. He urges that all Alumni must stay connected and support one another in their respective journeys and always be part of the Amy Foundation.

Spotlight Sunday: My Journey with the Amy Foundation

For this week’s Spotlight Sunday, let’s shine a light on one of our dedicated staff members and our After School Programme Manager, Siyabonga Ngqame

My journey with the Amy Foundation started on 18 January 2021, I first heard about the Amy Foundation from my community. Before joining the Foundation I worked as a teacher and then as a Community Liaison Officer at the UCT Research Department.
I discovered a job vacancy on #Indeed for an After School Programme Manager, and I was fortunate to be permanently employed at the Amy Foundation.
My work has taught me the importance of helping disadvantaged and vulnerable individuals and the necessity of care , ensuring that we follow up on the progress of our learners. I believe in the mission of the Amy Foundation because the Foundation provides a safe space where children can escape from drugs and crime.

The initiative I'm most excited about is the Sifunda Sidlala programme, which assists learners in reading with understanding. This is crucial because many children across the nation read without comprehending the material.

To anyone who wants to join the Amy Foundation come and join in order for life to change for the better.

Hello everyone, I’d like to introduce Nthato Komani, a participant in our After School programmes.

“My name is Nthato Komani, and I’m from Phillippi. I began participating in the Amy Foundation’s After School Programmes in 2016, when I was in Grade 4 at the Bongolethu center. Currently, I’m part of the Traditional Dance programme for seniors, led by the incredible Lilitha Mazana. His expertise has introduced me to various dance styles and greatly enhanced my skills.

I cherish this programme because it not only helps us develop into better individuals but also encourages young children to focus on their studies. We come from diverse backgrounds, and while some students need extra guidance and care, the Amy Foundation provides us with a supportive family environment.

Through the programme, I’ve learned traditional dance, music, greening, and the importance of respect. I’m also a student at the Waterfront Theatre School, and I consider myself fortunate to be among the ten selected from forty auditioned students.

I’m deeply grateful to the Amy Foundation for helping me grow and for giving me opportunities I never thought possible. My talent has flourished here, and I encourage other young people to join the Amy Foundation and experience the positive changes it can bring to their lives.

Spotlight Sunday: My Journey with the Amy Foundation

For this week’s Spotlight Sunday, let’s shine a light on one of our dedicated staff members, Wesley September.

"I’m Wesley September, and my journey with the Amy Foundation started last year in June. It began after I finished my studies for a Bachelor's in Sport Recreation and Events Management. After working for a 3-year contract with the Two Oceans Marathon, I reached a point where I needed a permanent job, meaning I had to start job hunting. I came across a job post on an app called Glassdoor that mentioned the Amy Foundation was looking for an Operations and Logistics Coordinator. I applied, and fortunately, I got the job.

The Amy Foundation has taught me how crucial planning is, the importance of effective communication with other staff members, and the value of following up with emails. I've also learned a lot about policies and procedures. I believe in the foundation's mission because it purely focuses on uplifting youth and giving them a second chance. The initiative I'm most excited about is the after-school programmes because it provides young children with opportunities to engage, develop, and grow.

Joining the Amy Foundation has been a significant stepping stone towards achieving my career goals and more."

Spotlight Sunday for Khanya!

"Hello everyone, my name is Khanya, and I’m an Amy Foundation alumni.
I joined the Amy Foundation Youth Skills Development Programme in June 2021 when I applied for the Handyman & Technical Skills Programme. At the time, I didn’t know much about it—I just wanted to learn something new. I first heard about the Amy Foundation from a friend I met in high school at Crossroads, Cape Town. After completing Grade 12, I was struggling to find a place at universities and colleges, with no success. That’s when my friend told me about the Amy Foundation.
Through the Handyman & Technical Skills Programme, I’ve learnt so much, including basics in woodworking, carpentry, and electrical work. Although I didn’t delve deeply into these skills, I’m incredibly grateful for what I did learn. For example, I now know how to make frames, something I couldn’t do before. This has allowed me to help people in my community and earn a little something in return.
I am currently working at Bushmans Kloof in Cape Town as a sculler. I’m so thankful for this opportunity because it allows me to provide for myself and my family. When I arrived at Bushmans Kloof, I realised just how vast the hospitality industry is, and now I dream of becoming a chef one day. My life has changed so much since joining the Amy Foundation—I now have a positive mindset, clear goals, and the confidence to tackle challenges I never thought I could handle.
To the youth out there, I want to say: never believe that there’s no tomorrow. Reach out to the people around you—they might help you find opportunities you never knew existed.
Thank you so much, Amy Foundation, for helping me become the person I am today. I can now speak with confidence, without being nervous. Once again, thank you, and I am truly grateful 💚🤍.

This Women’s Month, we honour Ruth Kamau, a dedicated supporter of the Amy Foundation’s Youth Skills Development programme since 2016. Ruth, a Managing Director at Ikhaya Lodge in Cape Town, has consistently volunteered her time as a keynote speaker during the foundation's quarterly Orientation Weeks. Her sessions on self-awareness and personal empowerment have profoundly impacted the learners, who express immense gratitude for her inspirational guidance.
Originally from Kenya, Ruth has called Cape Town home for the past 18 years. As a businesswoman in a male-dominated industry, she has faced numerous challenges, including balancing the demands of running a business with motherhood and combating societal biases that favour men as better decision-makers. Ruth has overcome these obstacles by building trust, making logical decisions, setting clear goals, and planning effectively.
Ruth emphasises the importance of self-awareness for women to succeed and grow. She believes in embracing unique feminine skills, understanding others' perspectives, and developing solutions that elevate the business. She highlights empathy, multitasking, and accountability as essential traits. One of her significant achievements was starting a 24/7 business in a foreign country, despite her background in marketing.

Ruth advises women to understand their full potential, believe in their ability to succeed, and actively engage in their fields. She encourages young women to ask themselves what their dreams are and what steps they are taking to achieve them. Her final piece of advice is to give 100% effort and strive to be the best in whatever they pursue. Ruth Kamau is a remarkable individual whose integrity and dedication inspire many. The Amy Foundation extends a heartfelt thank you to Ruth for her unwavering support.
