Arts & Culture
Culture and arts teach children about the world and about themselves. It offers them the freedom to explore, be inspired and to express themselves. In a fun and interactive way children learn skills like creativity and imagination, self-expression, fine motor skills, social skills and critical thinking. It encourages innovation and expression.
Programmes
The Amy Foundation After School Programme offers drama, marimba, brass, choir, hip-hop, ballet and traditional dance. These classes/programmes are spread across all five centres and are facilitated by our group of very well skilled facilitators who are performing artists themselves. Each of these classes serves between 25 and 40 learners from Monday to Thursday, each week in the afternoon.
Partnerships
We also have partnerships that assist us with outreach programmes. They offer workshops and masterclasses for our learners and facilitators:
- The UCT School of Dance lecturer Maxwell Rani gives African Contemporary Dance lessons to 30 of our learners every Saturday.
- Jazzart Dance Studios offers our learners masterclasses as well as performance opportunities in their shows.
- The Cape Town Opera provides our learners an opportunity to go and watch the final dress rehearsals of their Opera productions as well as UCT College of Music.
- South African Schools Shakespeare Festival let our learners perform a play in the festival each year and also run workshops for our drama facilitators.
- Zama Dance gives ballet lessons to our learners three days per week.
- We also have a great relationships with Aviva Pelham who assists our music classes, especially the choir, and Zola Shuman, who is a music composer and singer, and works with our choir.
We also give our learners the opportunity to perform at different events and venues to showcase what they have learned. All of these exciting opportunities are provided to our learners free of charge.
